Gloria and Robert

These papier-mache figurines were inspired by the novel “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They” by Horace McCoy. Gloria and Robert were the participants in a dance marathon during The Great Depression. I made these sculptures in the summer of 2010 when I was in the UAE. It was terribly hot outside, I could do nothing but stay locked in an air-conditioned apartment, there were no art supplies except paper and glue… so I created my sculptures almost out of nothing. I painted them afterwards with acrylics and made a sturdy base.
